Hancock City Park

We were in site #48 and it was amazing! We paralleled the water and were surrounded by trees. Our picnic table and fire ring were behind our rig and very private. We travel in a 40’
Class A towing a Jeep and had no trouble fitting and leveling. A 45’ rig would definitely fit. Even though it was only an electric only site (50/30) it was a 5 star experience due to the water views and secluded nature of the site. I booked this site the moment the reservations opened in January. This location (also known as Hancock Recreation Area) is perfect for leaving your rig and heading over to Isle Royale for a night or two. 

We were so lucky to get a great spot when we called last minute. We had spontaneously stopped at the Quincy copper mine and took the 2 hour tour (great!), but it threw our travel plans upside down.
I called and the lady was so sweet, she said come on, there’s a place. When we arrived, it wasn’t just a place, it was waterfront, all by itself. What a treat.
Being so close town, tv, phone and internet all worked great. We walked along the waterfront and saw the whole campground was terrific! Right at the edge of town, next to the fairgrounds, sort of. Easy to get to, easy to set up, super quiet. Loved it!

First time here.  Most sites are separated with trees.  Very quiet during the week. Pretty small and very clean.

We averaged $26 / night for E50/I.  Our dirt site in this heavily forested city campground overlooked a scenic lake.  Sites were nicely spread out and with the heavy wooded area we could not easily see sites beside us.  Internet service was good.  The biggest drawback is that we could not get level and therefore could not open our slides.  Our site sloped 8 to 10 inches between rear and front tires.  Because of the inability to level, I gave this 3 stars.  It would've been lower if the price had not bee so low.

All of the Keewanaw Peninsula is within an hour drive.  Not to be missed is Brockway Mountain.  We watched the sunset over Lake Superior 700 feet below us then drove 10 minutes to the other side and watched the full moon rise over Copper Harbor 30 minutes later.  It was fantastic!!!  The self guided Delaware Copper Mine tour taking us 1400 feet underground was also very interesting.

This is a nice park but only 4 sites have water and electric. The rest are electric only.  We were on site 4. It rained every day and our site was surrounded by water. Couldn't get in/out of our rig without getting wet. Enjoyed out stay. But wish we had been in a site without the standing water.

Good location with a park on the water for swimming, volleyball and a playground. Very friendly people. We stayed on two different sites and could not get level on either one. 

Know your site before you reserve it. I've never been here and it was getting late when we pulled into Houghton. Called but did not get an answer so we reserved online for site 27 based upon a map of the camp ground.  Upon pulling in, I realized fore and aft was an 8" adjustment with a 3 " adjustment  side to side. My rig is a 180 inch wheelbase truck camper.  SITE 26 has a 36ft class A. The front tire are 3 inches off the ground and the rear bumper  clears the ground by an inch. I RECOMMEND DRIVING INTOTHE CAMPGROUNG AND VISUALLY INSPECT YOUR SITE AND RESERVE ONLINE IF AVAILABLE. OTHERWISE GO BACK TO WAL-MART.  Good luck

We. were in RV site #48 (only electrical) for 2 nights, and it was the BEST SITE in the park - right next to the water, secluded, amid trees. For the price - $25/night - this is a steal.  We loved this city park! 

City park with beach next door and a few sites with Lake views.  No sewer hookups but dump station right on the way out.  

We had the only site in the park that was horribly not level.    Over a foot of slope from back to front and we choose that site as it was listed as a big RV site.  It was big but a large motorhome could not be leveled even using reasonable amounts of wood under tires and jacks.  No other large sites were available as most sites are for small campers so we cut our stay short as the MH listed from back to front badly.  

The sites on the first row near the street and the check in were large and level and would recommend them for large RV's.

Okay campground, great staff, electric only, site was level but a little small for our 40' motorhome. Bathhouse was good. Busy on weekends. Will stay here again.

9/2020. Hancock Campground  #34, in the woods. Small county park and campground on the Portage River just outside Houghton/Hancock area. Great central location to visit the Keewanaw Peninsula area. They have all types of sites - we had electric site. Some are by the river. Nice bathrooms and showers. Friendly staff. Definitely would come back. 

Beautiful wooded city campground. My spot was nestled in a wooded area overlooking the lake.Great price of $25 per night with electric. Doesn't feel crowded like most parks. Got my spot without a reservation on a weekday but booked up on weekends.

There is no consistency among the sites at this park. Some are very private and spacious, others are tight and in the wide open. The sites on the loop by the entrance are primarily open and many were spacious. However, one site had the water way off on one side and the power way off on the other. People struggled to position their rig to be able to connect. Some of the sites had lovely views of the water. There is a playground in the park and the city beach is right next door within walking distance.  The tent sites all looked to be in the woods and were very far apart. If I could get one of the more private, shaded spots closer to the water, I would consider going back there. Easy access to Houghton.

Great city rv park. Strong electric, very good wifi, & beautiful view from sites along the river, especially during the fall color season.

Nice clean park with a beach in walking distance.   I wish we had more time in the area. 

Clean park, only 12 sites with water but no biggie. Dump station was conveniently located. Easy walk to the lovely beach with a nice dock to jump off. CATV not working? ( could be user error lol). Some nice wooded sites, some on the Portage river. Site 28

Small park, some sites W/E, some 30A, some 50A, few with water. No FHU, good dump station.  On a hill, leveling on some sites could be a challenge.  Very nice staff.  Good base to tour the area - approx. 1 hour north to Copper Harbor. No OTA signal.  WiFi at our site, not sure if the sites by the water would have it. Sites near water could accommodate larger rigs - we had a back-in (#8) that was fine for our 26' and toad.

Nice park, clean , fairly secluded with trees. Could be a bit more level but very happy we stayed here. Good location and price for our 35 foot 5th wheel.

pluses - Nice wooded sites, decent bathrooms, short walk to Hancock City Beach on the canal which has little ice cream/ snack shop.  Close to Hancock and Houghton.

Minus - busy with lots of car and kid traffic on main  thoroughfares.    

Kids had fun fishing, hanging at the little beach, and campfires and sightseeing trips each day around the Keweenaw

Pulled in without reservation.  greeted at registration by very friendly staff.  took site #48. 50 amp. no water, no sewer.  wifi good coverage and speed (free) cable TV did not work, so I went back to my Directv.  2 OTA tv CW and ABC.

paid $22 cash  and happy watching the water 20 feet away.

Really nice campground. Not the easiest to find, had to stop and get directions(the street layouts are very confusing). Great rate of $20 for the night, hydro only(30 amp). Friendly staff.

This is a great little campground. We lucked out and got a site overlooking the canal and were able to watch boats traveling by. Hookups were fine would definitely stay there again.
