Fort Welikit Family Campground

We stayed 8 nights at Welikit and used it as a base to go out each day to see the sights. It's nearby Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, even Sturgis wasn't a big drive. 
The staff is wonderful with an easy check-in.  They have a nice little store for the essentials. A variety of sites: pull through,  back in, tent, teepee, cabins and more. They have a nice fort in a grassy area for the kids. Frisbee golf with at least 3 holes. Clean, well kept showers and bathrooms are available.  Lots of pine trees around each site. We will definitely come back when in the area.

We need send this as our home base when visiting SD - national parks, state parks, and the awesome breweries & wineries.  Clean. Quiet. And the staff is very friendly. Definitely recommend. 
Starlink users may need to request an outside site. Ask when booking about tree lines. Or call in sick 😂

Nice quiet campground nestled in the pines. Large sites with lots of shade. Accommodated our 40’ 5th wheel and dually truck easily. Nice playground for kids. Close to Rushmore and right outside of Custer SP. Staff were really nice! AT&T cell service worked well here. 

Beautiful park. Lots of pine trees. Every park employee we encountered was wonderful. We'll maintained. Great bathroom and showers. Very close to everything. We stayed in a 42ft fifth wheel for 10 days.  Great dog run. 

Loved this campground,. We stayed 7 nights got the last night fee. For us, the location was great, easy drive to all the different little towns.  close to Crazyhorse Mount Rushmore. We enjoyed the town of Custer, high city and Keystone.  6 miles from Needles Highway.  very friendly family that owns it. It’s very clean. We definitely go back again.

Steve and Kelly run a very well maintained, clean, shady, and quiet campground. The location in the Black Hills makes easy access to Custar State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Mt. Rushmore, and the Mickelson Rail Trail. The sites are level, nestled under pine trees and the bathrooms and laundry are clean. Steve and Kelly are very helpful,  friendly and know the area well. Steve helped troubleshoot our cable connection issue and what he can't fix, he refers to an excellent RV mobile repair service called GK Mobile RV Service Repair which we also used and with whom we were very satisfied. We camped here for close to three weeks and highly recommend this campground.

Really enjoyed this spacious park only 3 miles from town and 6 miles from Sylvan Lake. We did not have the need to use the bathrooms, showers or laundry so we can’t comment on them. However we got to know some of the friendliest camp workers and I’m sure they kept everything spotless! We enjoyed visits from deer and turkeys but be careful of hail storms! They have cabins, cute barrel cabins, teepees and a covered wagon for rent.

Very quiet campground with level spots, despite it being in a hilly,forested area.  You feel like you are in a state park but with all the upgraded amenities great wi-fi, laundry, full hookup’s with cable, very well maintained.  They also have cabins, teepees, and large barrels (very interesting), a small store with beer and wine from the local breweries and wineries.  So close to everything, within a 15-20 min drive.  We would definitely recommend and stay here again. 

This park is in the woods and has a feel of privacy and reminiscent of a nice state park BUT with great wifi and full hook ups and level sites.  Additionally, it is only about a mile out of the town of Custer.  Management maintained the sites meticulously.  Lots of grassy areas, nice dog area, plenty of wildlife roaming the park as well.  We highly recommend Ft Welikit because welikit.

This is a very nice well run campground with a friendly staff. Our site #8 was full hookups with cable and WiFi pull thru under a bunch of pine trees so it wasn’t too hot. Used as a base to tour the area and enjoy Sturgis and all it had to offer. Not much room for an outdoor rug due to sloping sites but was fairly level. Close to downtown Custer (a mile or so) and Hill City, Mt Rushmore, etc. would definitely recommend this place.

Sloped spaces, but beautiful pines everywhere.  Bathrooms were NEVER clean during our 6 day stay.  The WIFI is unusable.  We planned to stay 7 nights but left a day early due to a death in the family.  When we left, I asked if there was any chance they’d refund the last night under the circumstances…the man at the desk smiled widely & pointed to the sign on the wall, “no refunds for early departures”.  I’m writing this review several days after leaving…I still can’t imagine why he was smirking, it was so inappropriate.

Don’t try to arrive before check-in because you will be turned away and told to come back. Low water pressure (35 psi) throughout the park. The washers/dryers behind the office are good size and reasonably priced.  Our site was tucked tightly in the trees but room enough to put our slides out. Good location to access downtown Custer and surrounding National Parks. 

Clean, nice campground with fun playground and dog park.  I did not read my emails well regarding the extra $5 a night for any child over the age of 14.  I think 2 adults and 2 children in a camper, or really 4 period, should be no extra charge.  This is a great location to see the sites but we will stay inside Custer state park next time!

Lots of trees.  Close to town.  Big area for kids to play.  Nice atmosphere.  

Excellent Verizon signal (80 dn/16up).  Park WiFi (10 dn/1 up)  WiFi with booster (22dn/6up)  Camp is well cared for and bathrooms are cleaned every day.  Staff is helpful and friendly.   Laundry is expensive.  No pool or tennis courts, but close to all the black hills have to offer

We have had our RV for a year. Traveled throughout Colorado, Wisconsin and Minnesota. This park had personality. No two sites are alike. Tall pine trees, big open spaces, very welcoming and clean. I will absolutely stay here again. 

Our fav rv park in the region! Lots of tall trees. My daughter enjoyed playing and meeting new friends at the themed playground. Close drive to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, and Custer State Park wildlife loop. Will definitely come back!!

WE STAYED THERE FOR 9 DAYS IT WAS GREAT .I WISH WE COULD HAVE STAYED FOR A WHOLE SUMMER. CLOSE TO ALL SCENIC PLACES ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DO. 

We wanted a peaceful and quiet setting in the pines. This was perfect! Many locations had already closed for the season and we were having problems finding one open. Definitely would stay again.

Love it, staff were super. We moved to different spots multiple times as the place is reserved many months in advance. Stare reservations in jan 1. Shaded spots, wildlife, very quiet. Crept during bike week. reserved for next year. Custer and surround area are amazing. Love this place

Clean, friendly, lots of shade trees, and laundry facilities. Caution is required due to the number of trees, especially if parking a travel trailer. Easy access to Hill City, Rapid City, Mount Rushmore and the rest of the Park. A week was about the correct amount of time. Deadwood and Sturgis were about an hour drive to the north. Will stay again. 

I don't think you can judge a park by the obnoxious people who happen to camp near you.  This park is lovely and the folks running it are more than kind.

We actually found the folks in the office very polite and accommodated us nicely.  We asked for a different site and they gave us three to choose from.  I recommend you look at your site before parking.  Many are not level where the table is while others have very nice, spacious outdoor seating area.  We found the families here to be very nice and children were well behaved.  Best part - location is close to everything we wanted to do:  Iron Mountain Road, Needles Hwy., Custer Wildlife Loop, Michelson trail for bicycling to Hill City.  Definitely recommend this park.

We loved staying at this park. The tall pine trees offered great shade. The roads and sites are gravel/dirt so if you are looking for paved everything, this is not the place for you.  There are some potholes in the roads but nothing that will damage your rig. Just go slow. The owner, Steve and his team were very accommodating. Steve purchased the campground a few years ago and continuously makes improvements. We met several people who return regularly because they like it so much. We initially booked for 2 nights and liked it so much we decided to stay for 2 more. They squeezed us into a smaller site because that's all that was available and then alerted us a few hours later when there was a cancellation for a larger site.  We have a 39' motorhome.  There is a playground for kids and deer to watch.  It's close to Needles Hwy, downtown Custer, and Custer State Park. I highly recommend!  Bath houses were clean and well maintained. It was quiet at night . Staff VERY friendly!

Nice, quiet, well maintained park. Too many trees to get satellite. Wifi was terrible. Pricey wash and dry. Very attentive park owner. Convenient location.

We stayed for five nights in the third week of September. Our rate with a AAA discount was $40 per night. This RV park will try to accommodate your request for a site that meets your specific needs-- call and talk to them: our site (13) had a grassy area for our old dog, was near the shower building, and large enough to park our truck, trailer, and additional vehicle.

There is a playground and dog park, although both are located a ways from most campsites. There is a large tent area, with some tent sites having electricity and a shed roof over them. 

Two shower/flush toilet buildings. The smaller is located near the tent area. The larger has seven separate rooms, each with a shower, a toilet, a counter and sink. They were kept clean. 

Friendly office staff. They have advice and info on area attractions.

Some sites are close together, but many are large and arranged so that you don't feel crowded. Most are well shaded. 

This is a very popular campground and one of the nicest we saw in the Custer/Hill City area. Prime location along the quiet Hwy 89, only one mile from downtown Custer, and a short drive to  the entrance to Custer State Park, Needles Highway, and other scenic areas.

Asked for a site out of the way of others! The place was practically empty and they put someone next to me who were 40 years married bickering! Just what I want to here in the middle of the woods. Also  7 am sharp another guy next to me was drilling something for his rig, woke me up with a startle. Then about that time there was a screaming kid! All this could have been avoided if he put me at the end of the campground where there were no other campers. They were all empty! I told the owners father in law the next morning of all the trouble! He was very snotty and would not refund the second night even though I was not happy and not going to stay just to have to deal with the noise again. Bad stay! Would not recommend or stay here ever again!

It was a very nice park. Owners are very nice. Liked that each bathroom and shower with a separate entrance. A great playground for the children

Pro: the kids really enjoyed it, each shower is a private bathroom with a toilet, located in a pine forest.
Con:  First impression driving in was not good.  It just looks junky.  sites are really small and not level.  very little maneuver room or room to sit around our campfire.  I wouldn't go there again...there are too many state and national campground that were gorgeous and natural in this area.  We stayed here because we had kids with us and needed electricity.

Great family campground. Good facilities and friendly staff. Would recommend. 

Great space, quite, friendly and a great value.  I just wish we had found them sooner,  really not far from Custer and all the activities of the black hills.  If we didn't live a 1000 miles away we would be back almost every weekend!

Very nice, shady and quiet. Most RV campgrounds in the area are side of the road places. Not this one. Very nice owners.
