Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park / Union Bay Campground

Very scenic trails and Lake of the Clouds is beautiful. Sites are large but many are not level and pedestal on wrong side and  long distance. Water is available on the way in as is dump. Not much cell or wifi. Get supplies and fuel b4 going to this part of UP. Bath house is OK. Have fun.

We had a site on Lake Superior.   What a view.   Listen to the waves all night.   

Be sure to visit the Lake in the Clouds just down the road.  Easy walk on the board walk.  Amazing view. 

Nice location on Lake Superior. Many of the sites are quite small and close together, however. In some areas, you definitely get the vibe of camping in a (grassy) parking lot just a few feet away from 4-5 others. There are a few larger and a few more isolated sites, but those are the exceptions. There also seems to be a lot of traffic on the camp roads, probably because of the density of the campsites. All sites have electric and there is a modern bathroom and shower building. They have a new (2021) playground.  Can’t beat the Porkies for hiking, scenery, and stars, though!  I will probably stay at the private campground just down the road next time. Cellular coverage is spotty at best (despite what the coverage map says) so be sure to download any maps, e-books, trail descriptions, or geocaches before you come. 

State Park, so only electric, fill water & dump stations. Nice big sites. Great hiking all around. Only Maple trees & sumac turning colors. 

Peaceful & quiet even though it was busy!  Restrooms & showers were clean.  Bring your bug spray!

Beautiful lakeside campground in the Porkies. Many sites right on the water with amazing sunset and sunrise views. We stayed on site 6, with electric. The cool breeze and sound of waves crashing were amazing. Clean bathrooms/showers and friendly camp host (theres even a closet of games/activities for sharing!). Wish we could have stayed longer. Well be back!  

This is a nice park if you are interested in day trips to the porcupine mountains.  You cannot really access any trails or lookouts from the park itself- so make sure you have a vehicle you can use to get to the day park areas for your hikes. We did not pull a tow vehicle behind our class A so we were very limited in what we could see.  Nonetheless we enjoyed our stay.  There is a visitor center that provides a tremendous amount of information on the porkies and all the trails and day/overnight trips you can take - it’s not at the campground but very nearby.  Our site was very unlevel but we made it work.  Like most of the state parks we visited on our trip, the park rangers were very friendly and helpful. 

The “porkies” is an outstanding place to enjoy backpacking with union Bay as a base camp, good size sites for big rigs or tents. patrolled by rangers regularly, even the unpowered campground @ Presque Isle River (my fav spot in the world ) quiet, elevated, scenic from the northern sites overlooking Lake Superior even a sunset view from a few sites all the way to Bayfield and @ $17/night hard to ask for more plz make sure thermacells are close by
